The Florida Bar – The Florida Bar Association makes numerous consumer pamphlets available to the public, including Do You Have a Will?, Probate in Florida, The Revocable Trust in Florida, and What is Guardianship?

American Bar Association – Among the wills and estates resources offered by the ABA, you will find an informative page called 10 Things Estate Planning Can Do for You.

Florida Department of Elder Affairs – This is the primary state agency administering human services programs to benefit Florida’s seniors. Click this link to view or download a handbook on guardianship basics.

Nursing Home Compare – This Medicare website allows you to compare nursing homes rated according to Medicare’s five-star quality rating system.

1031 Like Kind Exchanges – This section of the IRS website may be helpful in understanding the tax implications of transferring business or investment property, and how you can avoid the capital gains tax through careful tax planning.

Aid & Attendance – Learn more about A&A and Housebound benefits of your VA pension on this page from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Florida Division of Corporations – Services available on this website include business name searches for corporations and limited liability companies, electronic filing of everything from articles of incorporation to judgment liens, and more.

Wage and Hour Division – This arm of the U.S. Department of Labor enforces the federal minimum wage and overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as the Family and Medical Leave Act and other federal employment laws. Learn more about minimum wage and maximum hour rules, including overtime exemptions for independent contractors and professional, executive and administrative employees.

Personal Injury Resources

Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles – Find tips on safe driving from the Safety First page or learn about requirements for PIP, BIL and PDL insurance coverage on the vehicle insurance questions and answers page.

Florida Highway Patrol – If involved in an auto accident on Florida highways, contact the FHP to conduct an investigation into the crash and write up an accident report. Real Estate Resources

Florida Real Estate Commission – The FREC administers and enforces the Florida real estate license law and regulates licensees, ensuring compliance with the law.

Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007 – This page at the IRS website can help you understand the income tax consequences of having a loan forgiven by the lender, such as in a loan modification or short sale.

AARP Reverse Mortgage Page – With a reverse mortgage, or home equity conversion loan, you can trade in the equity in your home for cash, if you are 62 years old or older and living in the home. Learn more about reverse mortgages at this page on the AARP website, but talk to an experienced estate planning and real estate attorney before you make any decisions, because there may be other options which are better for you if you are needing cash.
